Visit a Nez Perce Legend at the Heart of the Monster. Spalding, Idaho is a beautiful and friendly small town that is home to the headquarters and visitor’s center for the Nez Perce National Historic Park. The Park has a number of great places to people to visit and things for them to see, not least of which is the legendary Heart of the Monster.
Heart of the Monster - Spalding, Idaho
This rock formation is said to represent the heart of a monster in an ancient Nez Perce legend. Located in East Kamiah the site is approximately 53 acres 2 miles upstream from a bridge across the Clearwater River in Kamiah, Idaho.
During the 1877 war the Nez Perce forded the Clearwater at this site.
Lewis and Clark Canoe Camp Historical Site - Lapwai, Idaho
Idaho is known for its wilderness beauty so if you are looking for a great place to spend some time with nature and still learn some things about how it used to be then you will be interested in seeing this site.
It was here that Lewis and Clark's Expedition finally reached navigable waters after enduring months of hardship crossing the Bitterroot Mountains.
At the site the group camped from September 26 to October 7, 1805, while they built 5 canoes to enable them to continue their journey down the Clearwater, Snake and Columbia Rivers.
There is a replica of a canoe on display.
