Preflight

We welcome you to our pre-dawn/dusk launch prep location with a Continental Breakfast of Coffee and fresh pastries. After a brief pilot orientation you are taken to our launch site.

At our launch site you are greeted by the cheerful bustling of activity, the buzz of our powerful inflator fans, the vibrant coloration of our state-of-the-art balloons and the exciting blasts of burners. Our well trained and skilled staff ensures a safety conscious yet comfortable launch experience.

With steady, gentle care, the balloon ascends into the early morning breeze that ushers you above the historic Lewis and Clark Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in North America. As you drift along there is no turbulence. Carried along with the wind as your companion, you will experience the spirit of flight & adventure all at once—for you have become an Adventurist!

Above it all, your experienced and knowledgeable pilot and host will welcome questions and serve as your guide for points of local interest and the Valley’s extraordinary beauty.

The basket is an incredibly strong yet beautiful work of art, made of wicker and supple leather, and the glowing colors of the balloon punctuate the sky, you are now a spectacle the whole valley is watching in awe! Our baskets are designed for up to 5 passengers but generally limited to 4 as to provide extra space and comfort to our passengers.

Though the flight lasts an hour, the unforgettable memories will live on for a lifetime!

According to the legend of the Nez Perce tribe, this site is where Coyote defeated a fierce monster. The large rock is the Heart of the Monster, and the location is where the Nez Perce believe their people came into being as well.

Visitors can find the rock formation in East Kamiah, located close to the Clearwater River. Visitors will also be able to see and interpretive shelter that has two interesting exhibits. The audio exhibits tell of the Nez Perce culture and legends. You can listen to the stories in English or on the language of the Nez Perce.

You will also be able to find several trails in the area on which to hike. When you reach the Heart of the Monster, you will find another audio program. As you walk along the trails and experience everything there is to see at this site, keep an eye out for some of the native wildlife.

Because the Nez Perce National Historic Park has so much to offer, visitors will often try to see a number of different places besides only the Heart of the Monster. In Spalding, it is a good idea to head to the visitor center and museum, where you can learn more about the park and other places to see.

When at the visitor center, you should make sure you see the film Nez Perce – Portrait of a People. You will also want to look at all of the different exhibits, where you can see artifacts of the Nez Perce people. Some of the artifacts on display are clothing, tools, weapons, and ceremonial items. The exhibits will give you a great appreciation for the Nez Perce.

The site is open year round and there is no entry fee. You and the family are sure to have a wonderful time, learning about the Heart of the Monster as well as some other great Idaho locations. With all there is to do in Idaho, you will never find yourself looking for adventure – it’s around every corner.

Nez Perce National Historic Park – Spalding, Idaho is a post from: Idaho Tourism

This rock formation is said to represent the heart of a monster in an ancient Nez Perce legend.  Located in East Kamiah the site is approximately 53 acres 2 miles upstream from a bridge across the Clearwater River in Kamiah, Idaho.

During the 1877 war the Nez Perce forded the Clearwater at this site.

There is an interpretive shelter with two exhibits located here offering an audio program giving the background information on the role of legends in Nez Perce culture.  It also tells a part of the "Coyote and Monster" legend in both Nez Perce and in English. 

You can follow a short trial to the Heart of the Monster formation, where a small semicircle of seating awaits you for you to listen to the audio program there.  It is a state of Idaho "watchable wildlife" site.

Allen Pinkham (Nez Perce) from Salmon and His People – Fish & Fishing in Nez Perce Culture states: "Another version of the ?Coyote Creates the Human Beings" story tells how Coyote makes ropes out of vines, which he attaches to the three mountains (Mount Adams, Mount Hood, and Mount Rainier).  In his backpack he also put roots and fish and other things.  He taunts the monster who tries to suck him in.  As the vines break and as Coyote is drug along, he throws out the roots and food so that they will be there when the Human beings are created."

This site, located on the banks fo the Clearwater River south of Kamiah is the legendary birthplace of the Nez Perce Tribe.

Heart of the Monster – Spalding, Idaho is a post from: Idaho Tourism

Idaho is known for its wilderness beauty so if you are looking for a great place to spend some time with nature and still learn some things about how it used to be then you will be interested in seeing this site.

It was here that Lewis and Clark’s Expedition finally reached navigable waters after enduring months of hardship crossing the Bitterroot Mountains.

At the site the group camped from September 26 to October 7, 1805, while they built 5 canoes to enable them to continue their journey down the Clearwater, Snake and Columbia Rivers.

There is a replica of a canoe on display.

Lewis and Clark Canoe Camp Historical Site – Lapwai, Idaho is a post from: Idaho Tourism

If you go back in time a bit, to about 1804 to 1806, you would meet famed explores and surveyors Lewis and Clark.  During this time, the Lewis and Clark Expedition was underway.  This very important time in the country’s existence is one that outlined just what the country would have to offer for years to come.  The expedition happened to make its way to Idaho, which provided the individuals with a look at some of the country’s most fertile lands and helped to establish the American West as a frontier to explore.

When you visit the trail in which Lewis and Clark explored through Idaho, you will find yourself on top of a tree-lined path that is high above the lower lying fields.  In fact, many believe that this path was one of the most difficult parts of the journey these men had to take.  Because of its difficulty, it remains a remote location today, but you still may want to come and visit to see just what all the fame is about.

Today, you can visit the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.  It is located on Route 1, in Kooskia, Idaho.  This is in the north and central portion of the country, between the larger cities o Lolo Pass and Orofino.  The path starts at the Montana border and runs these two cities.  

The path has markings and is an ideal hike, though a long one and often a difficult one.  If you will be planning a trip to Idaho to explore the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, plan to have all of the necessary gear to travel through this rugged terrain.  Once you get going, and get to see some of the most amazing views in the country, you will appreciate the benefits of the climb.  This amazing view is something you will remember for a lifetime because of its diversity.

Idaho’s museums, including the Museum of Idaho offer wonderful educational and historic tours as well.  Ice Age Mammels is exhibiting in the Museum of Idaho, featuring Pleistocene-era mammals, the Columbian Mammoth, Mastodon, Saber Tooth Cat, Giant Ground Sloth, North American Camel, Giant Beaver, Ancient Bison, and Giant Short-Faced Bear.
