The Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre, established in 1967, is the oldest performing arts group in the entire state of Idaho. The perform Broadway musicals over the course of 12 weeks in the summer. Throughout the months of June, July, and August, they put on 36 shows in total. People from around Idaho, and even neighboring states, come to enjoy the shows.
A recent show at the theatre includes La Cage aux Folles, which is based on a French film. The film was the inspiration for the American movie Birdcage. The show is fun and was quite popular during its run. Another hilarious recent show is Once Upon a Mattress. The story is a retelling of the classic fairy tale The Princess and the Pea.
One of the most popular shows of their 2008 season is Les Miserables. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, this is one of the most popular musicals in the world. The musical has a wonderful score known by people the world over.
The musicals are performed in Schuler Auditorium. You can find the auditorium on the North Idaho College Campus on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene. The venue is beautiful, and when you watch a summer show, you’ll actually think you’re on Broadway.
